Toddlers & Preschoolers

STORY TIME:  Our library offers regular story times for two age groups:  Little Tots Story Time for children ages 6 months to 36 months, and Preschool Story Time for ages 3 years to 5 years.

Story Time is taking a hiatus for the month of May except for Family Story Time which is every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Regular Story Times start up again for the Main Library and the branch libraries the week of June 1, 2015. Check our Event Calendar for days and times.

FAMILY STORY TIME at the Main Library is every Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. All ages are welcome. Enjoy stories, music, and a fun craft activity in this 40 minute story time.

ACTIVE FAMILY STORY TIME at the Main Library is held the first and third Tuesdays of each month, starting June 2 through July 21, at 6:30 p.m. This 45 minute story time for children up to age 6 with their families, is a different kind of story time! We will read a couple of books and then go to the hands-on activity stations where children will sort objects by color or use clay to outline numbers. Each week will have five different learning activities. FREE

MOVIN’ TO MUSIC at the Main Library will be offered twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesdays starting June 9 through July 28 at 6:30 p.m. Children ages 3 through 6 years with a caregiver will sing, dance and move to the beat! This 45 minute session will include rhythm instruments, beanbags, bubbles, and a parachute. Join us for lots of musical fun!  FREE

EARLY LITERACY SUPPORT:  Our librarians have been trained in the “Every Child Ready to Read” program.  They can give you tips on choosing books for preschoolers and other ideas on strengthening  early literacy skills.  Click on Five Practices for Early Literacy to learn more.

COMPUTER GAMES:  The game computers on the Lower Level of the library have games chosen especially for preschoolers.  Two AWE stations have touch screens.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS:  Check the Event Calendar to find special programs for preschoolers.

Are playaway hand held stories (we had one about a caterpillar and flowers) available at the Mary E. Babcock Library?

    • Hi Patty! The regular Playaways (audio only) are available at Johnstown shelved with the books on CD, however the Playaway Views (audio & video) for toddlers & preschoolers are only available at main. Any titles you want can be placed on hold & delivered next day to Johnstown from the main library. -Mandie

My husband and I have taken turns bringing our 1+ toddler (now 16 months) to Family Story Time on several occasions, and I’m sad to say I don’t think we’ll be coming back. The atmosphere is rather rigid and unwelcoming to a child of that age. Independently, we both came away with the distinct impression that this program is really meant for older children, and the presence of children under 4 or 5 is merely (and barely) tolerated by the presenter and other attendees.
